How to Plan a Shed Haul-Away
Back to Helpful GuidesEstimate the load and prepare the path before dismantled shed material starts moving.

A haul-away goes more smoothly when the material, load path, and parking position are understood before loading begins. A photo of the pile alone may not show the weight or access.
Describe the material
List wood framing, sheet goods, shingles, metal panels, shelving, glass, and concrete separately. Wet wood and roofing can be much heavier than their footprint suggests. Keep loose sharp pieces contained and do not mix fuel, paint, batteries, or pressurized cylinders into the pile.
Trace the route
Walk from the debris to the street. Record the narrowest opening, steps, turns, slope, surface, and distance. A straight paved route is different from a long carry across soft turf.
| Detail | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Pile dimensions | Helps describe volume |
| Material types | Affects weight and sorting |
| Narrowest gate | Sets the carry path |
| Parking distance | Affects loading time |
| Loose sharp pieces | Need controlled handling |
Keep the loading area clear
Move vehicles, toys, hoses, and garden tools away from the route. Keep children and pets inside while material is moving. Confirm where the truck or trailer may park without blocking traffic or a neighbor’s drive.
