How to Empty and Measure a Storage Shed
Back to Helpful GuidesSeparate the contents from the structure and collect the measurements that matter for removal.

Treat the contents and the shed as two separate jobs. Emptying the building first makes the structure easier to inspect and gives a clearer picture of the material that needs removal.
Sort the contents first
Set aside what you will keep, what may need special disposal, and what can be discussed as ordinary removal. Do not hide liquids or chemicals inside boxes. Label fuel, oil, paint, pesticides, batteries, and propane so they can be addressed before the job.
Take useful measurements
- Exterior length and width at the walls
- Approximate height at the wall and roof peak
- Door width and any ramp projection
- Gate width at the narrowest point
- Distance from shed to a suitable loading position
Photo checklist
Take one photo from each corner, one inside, one of the roof, one of the base, and a short sequence showing the path from the shed to the street.
Look below the walls
Blocks, skids, anchors, pavers, and slabs change the scope. Ask whether the base is included. Concrete removal should never be assumed from a shed-removal quote.
Discuss the job
If you want help with storage shed removal, send the structure and access details in your email.
